If you are setting up an electric fence then your earthing system is something you should pay careful attention to.
If your earthing system is set up incorrectly then you won’t generate sufficient shock to keep your animals in or out of your enclosure.
This Jono & Johno earth system consists of three copper-plated earth rods, 3 easy to use brass clamps and 15 meters of 2.5mm insulated lead out wire. The 2.5mm measurement is for the aluminium wire and does not include the plastic coating.
You should ensure that your lead out wire is equal to or greater in diameter than the total wire component of your electric fence wire.
The earth rods are designed with optimum conductivity in mind. They are made from stainless steel with a copper coating.
Each rod has a clamp attached to secure your lead out wire. Ensure you strip back the plastic coating on the lead out wire at the point where the clamp will make contact.
Insert the earth rods approximately 80cm into the earth, leaving 20cm exposed.
We recommend placing your earth rods within 25m of your energiser. You should place the earth rods in as wet an area as possible, with a spacing of approx. 5m between each rod.
We recommend using three earth rods for electric fence systems that run over a distance greater than 1km. Three earth rods will ensure maximum conductivity for only a marginal extra cost.
You can pour water around the earth rods to keep the ground moist. If the earth is particularly dry or sandy then you can consider running an earth wire through your electric fence. This is an alternative method for setting up an electric fence which will eliminate the variability associated with dry conditions.
