Types of Chainsaw Grinding Wheels and Stones
Our range covers the three ways people sharpen with an abrasive rather than a file:
- Bench grinder wheels: flat grinding wheel discs in 100mm, 105mm and 145mm diameters for 240V bench and electric chainsaw sharpeners. These are the workhorses for resharpening a batch of chains or bringing a badly dulled chain back.
- 12V sharpener stones: threaded grinding stones and diamond stones in 5/32", 3/16", 7/32" and 13/64", built for 12V field sharpeners that run off a car or ute battery. These let you touch up a chain on the tailgate without mains power.
- Diamond wheels and stones: for tungsten carbide chain, which a standard wheel cannot cut. Diamond is the only abrasive hard enough to sharpen carbide.
Choosing the Right Grinding Wheel or Stone
A few things decide which one you need:
- Wheel thickness: 3.2mm suits 1/4", .325" and 3/8LP chain, 4.8mm suits 3/8 and .404". The thicker wheels are for the larger pitches, so match the wheel to the chain you run.
- Wheel diameter: 100mm, 105mm and 145mm wheels fit different sharpener models, so check what your grinder takes before ordering.
- Standard or diamond: a standard chainsaw grinding wheel sharpens ordinary chrome chain. For tungsten carbide chain, you need a diamond wheel or diamond stone.
- Sharpener type: bench and 240V sharpeners take the flat grinding wheel discs, 12V field sharpeners take the threaded stones. Buy for the sharpener you actually own.

Keeping Your Grinding Wheel True
Grinding wheels wear and glaze over time, which leaves them cutting slower and hotter. A dressing brick cleans and reshapes the wheel face so it keeps cutting cleanly and holds the correct profile. Dressing the wheel every few sharpenings makes it last longer and gives a more consistent edge on every tooth.
