Water pumps are incredibly useful machines that are essential for a wide range of applications, from irrigation and drainage to firefighting and plumbing. They are designed to move water from one location to another, making them invaluable tools for anyone who needs to transfer large quantities of water quickly and efficiently.

The Three Questions That Decide Your Pump

Before comparing models, it helps to answer three things:

  1. What are you moving, and is it clean? Clean water from a tank or dam suits a standard transfer pump. Gritty or muddy water needs a trash pump. Chemicals or salt water need a corrosion-resistant pump.
  2. How much water, how fast? This is your flow rate, measured in litres per minute (LPM). Topping up a tank needs far less than fighting a fire.
  3. How high and how far? This is your head: the total vertical lift plus the pressure lost pushing water along the hose. Get this wrong and the pump won't deliver, no matter how powerful it is.

Types of Water Transfer Pumps

There are several types of water transfer pump to choose from. Each type has its own unique characteristics that make it more suitable for certain applications than others. Here's a breakdown of the different types of water transfer pumps available, along with their advantages and disadvantages:

Centrifugal Pumps

These pumps are the most commonly used type of water pump. They work by using a rotating impeller to create a centrifugal force that pushes water through a discharge pipe. Centrifugal pumps are relatively inexpensive, easy to maintain, and can handle a wide range of flow rates. However, they are not suitable for pumping high-viscosity fluids or solids.

Positive Displacement Pumps

Positive displacement pumps work by trapping water in a cavity and then forcing it through the discharge pipe. These pumps are more efficient than centrifugal pumps and can handle high-viscosity fluids and solids. However, they are more expensive, harder to maintain, and not as versatile.

Submersible Pumps

Submersible pumps are designed to be submerged in water and work by pushing water to the surface. They are ideal for pumping water from wells, ponds, and other bodies of water. Submersible pumps are energy-efficient, quiet, and easy to install. However, they can be more expensive than other types of pumps and may require professional installation.

High-Pressure Pumps

High-pressure pumps are designed to pump water at high pressures, making them ideal for applications such as firefighting and irrigation. They are generally more expensive than other types of pumps, but they can handle higher flow rates and pump water to greater heights.

When choosing a water transfer pump, it's essential to consider the specific needs of your application. For example, a camping water pump may require a smaller, more portable pump than a high-volume transfer pump for industrial use. Understanding the advantages and disadvantages of each type of pump can help you make an informed decision.

Trash Pumps

A trash pump is a transfer pump built to pass solids. The impeller and housing are sized so mud, leaves, twigs and grit up to a rated size go straight through without clogging. If you're dewatering a worksite, clearing a flooded shed, or moving dam water thick with debris, this is the pump. On clean water, a standard centrifugal transfer pump is cheaper and does the job just as well.

Flow Rate and Head

When choosing a water transfer pump , two important considerations are flow rate and head. Flow rate refers to the volume of water that a pump can move in a given amount of time, usually measured litres per minute (LPM), sometimes shown as gallons per minute (GPM) on imported units. Head, on the other hand, refers to the height that a pump can lift water, usually measured in feet or metres.

Calculating the necessary flow rate and head for your specific situation will depend on various factors, such as the distance the water needs to be moved, the height the water needs to be lifted, and the type of application you are using the pump for. To calculate the required flow rate, you must determine the water volume that needs to be moved per minute. To calculate the required head, you will need to determine the height that the water needs to be lifted, along with any additional resistance or friction losses.

Once you have determined the required flow rate and head, you can select a pump that meets these requirements. It's important to choose a pump that can handle the required flow rate and head, as using a pump that is not powerful enough can result in decreased efficiency and damage to the pump. On the other hand, using a pump that is too powerful can also lead to decreased efficiency and unnecessary energy consumption.

Here's how that works in practice. Say your water sits 4 metres below the pump and your tank inlet is 6 metres above it. That's 10 metres of vertical head before the water has travelled anywhere. Now add the horizontal run: as a rough rule, every 10 metres of hose adds around 1 metre of equivalent head, and each sharp bend adds a little more. A 50-metre hose run adds roughly 5 metres. So you'd want a pump rated to at least 15 metres of head, and ideally one with a bit of room above that, because a pump running at its maximum head delivers almost no flow.

If a job is quoted in PSI rather than metres, such as firefighting, you can convert: multiply the maximum head in metres by about 1.42 for the approximate maximum pressure in PSI. For home fire protection, aim for a pump rated over 100 PSI.

Power and Efficiency

Power and efficiency are two more elements to take into account when selecting a water transfer pump. Power is the amount of energy needed for a pump to function and is typically expressed in horsepower (HP) or kilowatts (kW). The quantity of energy that is transformed into meaningful work is referred to as efficiency, which is defined as the ratio of the pump's output power to its input power.

Factors that can affect power and efficiency include the motor size, pump design, and the materials used to construct the pump. A larger motor size will generally provide more power but also require more energy to operate. A well-designed pump with a high-quality impeller can also improve efficiency and reduce energy consumption. Additionally, pumps constructed with durable materials such as stainless steel or cast iron will generally have a longer lifespan and require less maintenance.

When comparing different water transfer pumps, it's important to consider the power and efficiency ratings of each pump. A pump with a higher power rating may be able to handle higher flow rates and head, but it may also consume more energy and be less efficient. Choosing a pump with a balance of power and efficiency can help you save on energy costs and ensure that your pump is operating at peak performance.

Other Considerations

In addition to flow rate, head, power, and efficiency, there are several other factors to consider when choosing a water transfer pump.

Noise level is an important consideration, especially if you will be using the pump in a residential or a noise-sensitive area. Electric water transfer pumps are generally quieter than petrol water pumps, so this may be a better option if noise is a concern.

Portability is another factor to consider, especially if you will be moving the pump from one location to another. Some water transfer pumps are designed to be lightweight and easy to transport, while others may be heavier and more difficult to move.

Durability is also important, as a pump that is built to last will require less maintenance and provide reliable performance over time. Pumps constructed with high-quality materials such as stainless steel or cast iron will generally have a longer lifespan than those made with cheaper materials.

Price is also a consideration, as water transfer pumps can vary widely in cost. While it may be tempting to choose a cheaper pump, it's important to consider the long-term costs of maintenance and potential replacements.

Finally, ease of maintenance is important to ensure that your pump remains in good working condition. Look for pumps with easily accessible parts and simple maintenance requirements.

Match Your Job to the Right Pump

Once the theory is out of the way, most decisions come down to the job in front of you:

  • Filling or emptying a clean tank or dam: a petrol centrifugal transfer pump, sized to your flow and head.
  • Deep bore or well: a submersible pump that can draw from below the water line.
  • Muddy or debris-filled water: a trash pump rated for the solid size you're moving.
  • Bushfire protection on a rural block: a high-pressure petrol firefighting pump over 100 PSI, which doubles as a transfer pump the rest of the year.
  • Quiet, fixed household use near a power point: an electric pump.
