Important Lawn Mower Parts To Regularly Service or Replace

Maintaining a beautiful and healthy lawn isn’t all about mowing it regularly. If you want to keep your lawn the most attractive thing in the neighbourhood, you also need to ensure that your lawn mower is in excellent operating condition at all times. A lawn mower that is properly maintained could last up to 15 years! But how do you do maintenance on your lawn mower? Which lawn mower parts should you service (or possibly replace) regularly?

Lawn Mower Parts to Regularly Service or Replace

A lawnmower consists of various parts that are subject to wear and tear, but the following are the most common parts you need to service regularly or replace when needed.

Blade

The blade of your lawn mower is what gets the job done, so it only makes sense to keep the blades sharp if you wish your lawn to be in pristine condition all the time. Even if your lawn seems to be clear of foreign objects like rocks or branches, the blades will wear out over time, especially if you use the mower regularly. The good news is that you can sharpen the blades yourself. Start by removing the spark plug from the mower first and find the nut or bolt keeping the blade in place. It’s ideal to have a spare so you’ll have another blade to use while you sharpen the other one.

Spark Plugs

Speaking of spark plugs, you will need to replace them annually to ensure that your lawn mower starts up with no issues. They are easy to remove, and you can carry them with you to a local store if you’re buying from one so you’re sure you are getting the right size. Lawn mowers use “small engine” spark plugs. Keep this in mind whether you’re buying replacement parts for lawn mowers online or the nearest engine supply store.

Air Filter

Depending on the model of your mower, it may or may not come with a reusable air filter. If it doesn’t, it means you will need to replace the old one once it has worn out. If you have a mower with a reusable air filter, be sure to remove and clean it regularly. The foam pre-cleaner needs to be cleaned every after 25 operating hours, while the paper air filter needs servicing every after 300 operating hours. In dusty conditions, you may need to clean the air filter more often than usual.

Engine Oil

Lawn mower engines use oil for lubricating the engine. To ensure a smooth operation of your mower, top up or replace old engine oil on schedule. Consult your lawn mower’s owner’s manual to find out which oil to use and how often and how much oil you need. You will know it’s time to change the oil when the oil level is already below the minimum mark on the dipstick and the oil has debri in it and is already burnt in colour.

Recoil Start

Most lawn mowers come with a recoil starter or pull starter rope. You won’t be able to start your mower if this part gets stuck. There are three reasons for this to happen. One, the cord may have gotten tangled. Two, the spring is broken. Three, the mower was stored for a long time, resulting in a buildup of corrosion.

In all these cases, you can simply remove 2 to 3 screws from the blower housing to gain access to the mechanism and find out what could be wrong. If the cor is tangled, you can simply untangle it. If there’s a buildup of corrosion, you can try greasing the string with silicone spray. If the spring is broken, you will need to replace the affected part.
